- Weight control: The battle of the waist line bulge can be particularly tough for women past menopause. But a new study found overweight women in their 50s and 60s who made four particular changes in their diets had the best long-term chance of losing weight or at least keeping off new pounds. Their secrets: Eating more fruits and vegetables, eating fewer desserts, drinking fewer sweetened beverages and cutting down on meats and cheeses, say researchers from the University of Pittsburgh.
- Dental cuts: It's increasingly difficult for poor adults in many parts of United States to get adequate dental care, as states trying to control Medicaid costs slash dental benefits, the New York Times reports. But having Medicaid coverage doesn't always solve the problem: many dentists won't accept it.
- Unwanted erections: The number of men who show up in emergency departments with unwanted persistent erections (a condition known as priapism) is higher than previously thought, researchers tell MedPage Today. Emergency doctors treated nearly 40,000 cases between 2006 and 2009, they estimate. One suspect in what may be an increasing problem: injected drugs for erectile dysfunction.
