Should You Drink Water After A Massage?


Why do masseuses always tell you to drink lots of water after a massage?

Massage therapists often ask patients to drink water after a rubdown. In fact, it's recommended by the American Massage Therapy Association. But why?

Many practitioners believe that deep tissue massage releases toxins from the muscles and into the blood stream. They assert that the water helps the kidneys and pancreas to process those toxins. And while research shows that massage is useful for many conditions -- from anxiety to several types of cancers to childhood constipation -- the truth is that there's no research that clearly illustrates how massage affects toxicants in the body.

"To my knowledge, there is no solid base of research to support the notion that massage moves toxins out of the tissues. By solid, I mean more than a single study. Instead, to be given serious consideration, we need multiple studies, from multiple investigators, in peer-reviewed publications, reporting similar results on this point," wrote massage therapist Tracy Walton, LMT, MS in an editorial for Massage Today.

"There clearly is room for more dialogue and research in the profession of massage about the precise effects of our work."

In addition to the research on the benefits of massage for particular conditions, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine offers several theories, ranging from neurological to physiological, about how massage affects the body, but none particularly relate to toxicant release.

That said, drinking water isn't just essential to life -- though most properly nourished people drink enough water to live. Drinking enough water is also essential to good health, and that is often related to our body's ability to detoxify. Water supports the kidneys as they process toxicants and nutrients. And a well-hydrated body transports oxygen throughout all cells.

So while the reason many massage therapists recommend drinking water directly after massage isn't firmly established in the research literature, there are many good reasons to drink it anyway.

Study: One Sugary Drink Per Day Raises Risk of Heart Disease for Men


The evidence linking sugar-sweetened beverages with an array of health problems -- including obesity and diabetes -- keeps piling up. And a new study adds one more potential risk to the list: coronary heart disease.
According to a new study, men who drink one sugar-sweetened beverage daily have a 20 percent higher risk of coronary heart disease than men who drink none.

Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health tracked nearly 43,000 participants in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, which included male dentists, pharmacists, physicians, veterinarians and other health professionals ages 40 to 75, almost all of whom were of European descent.
For 22 years, the men filled out surveys about their diets and other health habits. The researchers also collected blood samples from more than 18,000 men who were demographically similar to those in the survey.

The results, published today in the American Heart Association's journal, Circulation, found that drinking 12 ounces of regular soda, fruit drinks and other sugar-sweetened beverages daily was associated with a higher risk of heart disease, even after taking into account other cardiovascular risk factors, such as smoking, physical inactivity, alcohol use and a family history of heart disease.

Dr. Frank Hu, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health and the lead author of the study, said the findings were notable because even relatively modest consumption of sugary beverages – just one drink per day – was associated with an increased risk of heart disease.

"These drinks should be treated as a treat, not for all the time," Hu said.
Sugar-sweetened beverages include regular soda, fruit drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks and sugar-sweetened water.

A 2011 report from the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that about 25 percent of Americans drink the equivalent of more than one can of soda each day. The study also found that men who drank daily sugar-sweetened beverages had certain markers of cardiovascular disease in their blood, including higher levels of lipids like triglycerides and lower levels of HDL, or "good," cholesterol.

Hu said increases in these markers could give some clues about the biological mechanisms that may connect sugary drinks and heart disease.

Previous research suggests that the link between sugary drinks and heart disease may exist for women as well. The current study's findings mirror those of a study of nearly 89,000 women, the Nurses' Health Study, which Hu and his colleagues published in 2009. That study found that women who drank one or less than two sugary drinks per day had a 23 percent increased risk of a heart attack.

The current study didn't find an association between diet drinks and cardiovascular disease, and previous studies have failed to link diet drinks with an increase in diabetes risk or weight gain. This may be because people who choose diet drinks might be more likely to develop better diets and healthier lifestyles overall. In the current study, the men who drank diet soda often got more exercise and smoked less.

But some nutrition experts hesitate to suggest that people simply replace sugar-sweetened beverages with diet drinks because of inconclusive evidence about the long-term effects of artificial sweeteners. Some research also suggests that diet soda can condition the taste buds to crave sweets, leading to higher sugar intake in other parts of the diet.

A growing body of research connects sugary drinks with increased risk of diabetes, weight gain, high blood pressure and a number of other chronic diseases. But nutrition experts note that the current study doesn't show that sugar-sweetened beverages cause heart disease. Consuming sugary drinks every day may simply indicate less healthy lifestyles that could lead to heart disease.

"To some extent, people who drink more soda are apt to eat less well overall," said Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale Prevention Research Center. "Too much added sugar in the diet is likely a 'marker' of lower overall diet quality."

Nutrition experts emphasize that making any single ingredient out as the bad guy is a mistake.
"Attempting to blame or pinpoint any one cause for disease risk or overweight, fails to recognize that overall lifestyle is the key to health," said Connie Diekman, director of university nutrition at Washington University in St. Louis.

The American Beverage Association, a trade organization representing the beverage industry, disputed the study's findings.

"Drinking sweetened beverages does not cause an increased risk of heart disease – not based on this study or any other study in the available science," the ABA said in a statement, adding that a healthy weight, balanced diet and physical activity are the real keys to reducing the risk of heart disease.

Soda Drinking Every Day Could Raise Women's Stroke Risk



Yet another study is linking regular consumption of sugary drinks with risk of stroke.

The newest finding, first reported by Reuters and published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, shows that women who said they drank the most soft drinks in the study had an 83 percent higher risk of ischemic stroke than those who reported drinking the fewest soft drinks.

Earlier this year, a study in the Journal of General Internal Medicine showed a link between drinking a diet soda every day and higher stroke and heart attack risk.

"It makes sense, if [sugar sweetened beverages] increase the risk for obesity, diabetes, insulin resistance, inflammation, then it should, in fact, raise the risk for cardiovascular disease, and that's what we're seeing," Cleveland Clinic's Adam Bernstein, who was not involved in the study, told Reuters.

The study included 39,786 men and women in Japan between the ages of 40 and 59, who were tracked between 1990 and 2008. They filled out a questionnaire asking them about their soft drink consumption.
By the end of the study period, 453 people had ischemic heart disease and 1,922 people had had a stroke (1,047 of which were ischemic, the other 859 were hemorrhagic).

Researchers found that women who had drank the most soda in the study -- Reuters reported that this was nearly a soda a day -- had a higher risk of ischemic stroke than those who drank the least soda in the study. However, researchers didn't find a risk between soda consumption and ischemic heart disease, or hemorrhagic stroke for either men or women.

A previous study from Harvard researchers did find a link between sugary drink consumption and increased coronary heart disease risk, at least for men, ABC News reported.

In that study, which included 43,000 people who were part of the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, coronary heart disease risk was found to be 20 percent higher for the men who drank a daily sugary drink, compared with those who didn't drink any sugary drinks, according to ABC News.

The findings are important because we as Americans drink a lot of sugary drinks, and it's necessary to know what the potential ramifications are. After all, a recent Gallup study showed that nearly half of Americans drink a soda every single day.

Obese Dogs May Also Be At Risk For Metabolic Syndrome


Obese humans aren't the only ones at risk for metabolic syndrome -- a new study shows that obese dogs face the same risk, too.

Metabolic syndrome is the name for a group of conditions, including high cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure, as well as excess body fat, according to the Mayo Clinic. Metabolic syndrome raises the risk of diabetes and heart disease.

The study, published in the journal BMC Veterinary Research, involved looking at the health of 35 dogs who were obese. Of those dogs, 20 percent had metabolic syndrome -- with low levels of the sugar- and fat-controlling protein adiponectin and high levels of insulin in their blood.

The researchers also found that if the dogs lost weight, these metabolic issues improved.
"This new research creates a lot of new questions for us. It suggests that dogs develop metabolic syndrome, similar to humans with obesity-related health problems," study researcher Dr. Alex German, of the University of Liverpool's Department of Obesity and Endocrinology, said in a statement. "We now need to investigate, however, what health consequences this may have for dogs. The key point for us is that the problem can be resolved with successful weight loss, and this must be a priority for pet owners with obese dogs."

Recently, Reuters reported that rates of pet obesity are increasing -- more than half of adult-aged dogs are obese -- prompting pet-focused exercise classes to spring up at fitness companies.

Tufts University's Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine has even opened up an obesity clinic for animals; one of its missions is to help overweight or obese pets lose weight, HuffPost Green earlier reported.

Surefire Stress Relief, Part 1: Breathing Through Your Heart



How different would your life be if you could intentionally shift yourself out of tension and anxiety into a relaxed, clear-minded state in just 30 seconds?

A couple of weeks ago, I got on a conference call about an investment opportunity in my company, HeartMath. The consultant on the call, who had been a CFO of two public companies, said it had been a strained morning for him. "I really need to chill," he admitted at the start of our call, so I offered to guide him virtually through our Heart-Focused Breathing technique as a way to help him de-stress. He agreed.
"Focus your attention on the area of your heart," I said. "Let go of whatever you've been thinking or doing. Pretend your breath is flowing in through the area of your heart and out through the area of your heart." I began to feel him settle down into breathing slowly and easily. After a pause, I continued: "Now, focus on someone or something in your life you really appreciate and feel gratitude for while continuing Heart-Focused Breathing."

Some 15 seconds later, he said, "Wow, I feel so different. This stuff really works." My investment adviser, who's been working with HeartMath for nearly a decade, was also on the line. She'd heard similar stories before, but this was the first time she'd witnessed a senior executive in her own field make such an immediate change. She was so astonished at the impact that, at our next in-person meeting, she said, "If that technique can do that for him, this can change the world!" She's since become an even bigger believer and evangelist of our work.

Our research at HeartMath has shown that Heart-Focused Breathing can help people quickly reduce stress -- and in this day and age, quickly is the only way most people are willing to try. This technique may be used in everyday stress, anger, anxiety and emotional overload or in times of acute crisis, where it's especially helpful. Breathe in an attitude of calm and balance, as if you were taking in an emotional tonic that takes off the rough edges. You can also try breathing in a feeling of gratitude or compassion -- or whatever attitude you find most soothing. As you shift into the positive feeling, notice when you feel the release. You will likely feel genuine appreciation or compassion and the former uncomfortable physical sensations replaced by comforting, relaxed ones.

This exercise can be done in a quiet place or while walking, jogging, or -- once you get familiar with it -- even participating in a conversation.

I use this technique whenever I notice I am stressed to reboot my inner computer. Then I come back into balance and have more clarity about my next steps.

How Power Outages Wreak Havoc On Your Sleep



Hurricane Sandy left millions of east coasters without power this past week -- and though some are finally beginning to see the light once again, for others the wait is far from over. But while extended power outages bring obvious, extreme inconveniences to the waking hours, they could also be wreaking havoc at night.

"You can get your sleep screwed up very quickly," says W. Christopher Winter, M.D., medical director of the Martha Jefferson Hospital Sleep Medicine Center in Charlottesville, Va. When the power goes out, we see a disruption in zeitgebers, a German word for "time givers," or those little items your body uses to understand where it is in the day, he explains -- things like light exposure, exercise, bathing, social interaction and eating. "Those are the things that really help your body kind of figure out where it is in a 24 hour period," he tells HuffPost.

But when we lose power, all those routines go out the window -- we eat when we can, bathe when we can and exercise when we can (if at all). And after the sun sets, light is no longer streaming in from overhead bulbs and technology. "Your schedule starts to become disturbed and so does your sleep," Winter says. And so when the sun sets in the early evening and you've got nothing to do, heading to bed early can seem like the only option. "If you're someone who's very sleep deprived perhaps it's a blessing, but for most people you're waking up at 4 in the morning," he says. More bad news? We'll have even fewer daytime hours when we push our clocks back an hour earlier this Sunday morning to mark the end of daylight saving time (in New York City, for instance, the sun set at 5:51 p.m. on Friday -- this Sunday, after the change, it's expected to set at 4:48 in the evening).

"You're basically a hostage of the daylight schedule which, of course, is not great in November in New York," says Joe Ojile, M.D., founder and CEO of the Clayton Sleep Institute in St. Louis, Mo. and a board member of the National Sleep Foundation. When you add to that the anxiety of dealing with the storm and all of its subsequent damage and power outages, you have a recipe for a bad night's rest. "Stress is the single most important thing that keeps you from sleeping," he says. (And on top of that, research shows that shortchanging your shuteye can make you more vulnerable to daytime anxieties, he explains, creating a vicious cycle.)

Ojile and Winters agree that your sleep schedule can be reset quickly under these circumstances -- meaning that by the time you emerge from the other side of the outage, you could have shifted ahead multiple virtual time zones, going to bed at, say, 7:30 p.m. eastern time and waking up seven hours later at 2:30 in the morning. "You can very easily get your days and nights almost reversed," Winters says.

There's not much you can do in the midst of an outage -- if possible, Winters suggests seeking some ambient light and activity in the early evening, by visiting, say, your local gym if it's open and safe to access. "Exercise tends to wake people up a little bit ... If you want to do jumping jacks in the dark you can do that too," he jokes.

For children, whom it might be hard to convince it's bedtime when it's always dark, he suggests sticking as closely as possible to your regular bedtime routine. If you typically eat dinner together, clean up, take a shower or a bath, play with certain toys, change into your pajamas and read two books, for instance, do your best to maintain that normalcy, allowing kids to wind down. If some parts of the routine aren't feasible without power, like taking a bath, replace it with another soothing activity. "Try to recreate that march toward bedtime as much as possible," he says.
What you shouldn't do is pressure kids to sleep, which only creates anxiety about the process, ultimately making it harder to ease into a restful state. If the disrupted routine means they can't fall sleep right away, allow them to stay up with a flashlight and a book, or another peaceful, quiet activity. But enforce a regular wake-up time to help re-set healthy patterns. "Try to keep them on that schedule on the back end even if the front end is difficult," he says. "[Say], 'Whatever happens, I'll see you at 6:30.'"

But while there are things you can do during a power outage to mitigate the damage to your sleep cycles, the real work comes once the lights are back on. If you said goodbye to to the power with your internal body clock set to eastern time and welcomed it back closer to London time, certain behavioral strategies can help you reset, similar to how you would adjust from jet lag or other body clock shifts. Winters recommends sticking to a regular wake-up time, seeking bright light first thing in the morning (either from a light machine or the sun) and avoiding naps until your body is back on track. It typically takes about one day to adjust for each hour you move your circadian clock.

It's also worth noting that it's not all bad news when it comes to sleep and power outages. While the stress and routine changes may cause disrupted sleep schedules for some people, for others, it can provide a much needed push to go to bed just a little bit earlier. In fact, roughly 30 percent of U.S. workers report getting fewer than six hours of sleep, despite recommendations that adults shoot for between seven and nine hours each night. (And we know chronic sleep deprivation is linked with a host of serious health problems.)

"It might give them a chance to catch up on that sleep," says Laura Barger, Ph.D., an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School and an associate physiologist in the division of sleep medicine at the department of medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital. "Once they see how good they feel with getting adequate sleep they may decide that it needs to be a priority in life." If you're already working to re-set your patterns after a sleep disruption, why not strive for a solid eight hours, she suggests: "That would be a positive outcome."

Cholesterol Levels Improving In U.S. Adults



Our cholesterol levels are collectively going down, according to a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The new study shows that levels of total cholesterol and levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol have decreased in adults between 1988 and 2010.

Overall, total cholesterol went from 206 milligrams of cholesterol per deciliter of blood in 1988-1994 to 196 milligrams per deciliter in 2007-2010.

Researchers also found that levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol went down from 129 milligrams of cholesterol per deciliter of blood in 1988-1994 to 116 milligrams per deciliter in 2007-2010.

Researchers also noted that more adults received lipid-lowering drugs during this time period, going up from 3.4 percent in 1988-1994 to 15.5 percent in 2007 to 2010.

"The favorable trends in TC, non-HDL-C, and LDL-C may be due in part to a decrease in consumption of trans-fatty acids or other healthy lifestyle changes, in addition to an increase in the percentage of adults taking lipid-lowering medications," the researchers wrote in the study. "They are unlikely to be the result of changes in physical activity, obesity, or intake of saturated fat."

The study was based on the cholesterol levels of participants in the National Health and Examination Surveys administered between 1988 and 2010. Researchers used information from 16,573 people in the 1988-1994 survey; 9,471 people in the 1999-2002 survey; and 11,766 people in the 2007-2010 survey.

Earlier this year, a study in JAMA also showed that cholesterol levels in kids and teens were getting better. However, one in 10 youths still had high cholesterol between 2007 and 2010, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention researchers found.

It's important to keep cholesterol in check because too much of it can lead to heart disease and stroke by building up on the insides of your arteries, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention pointed out.
